Reading Fluency

Reading fluency refers to the ability of a reader to decode and identify words smoothly and accurately. Fluent readers use a converstional tone, and read with appropriate phrasing and expression. Effective reading comprehension is dependent on the ability of the student to read with fluency.

Poor reading fluency leads to difficulties with reading comprehension. Students who are focusing energies on word identification will lose meaningful understanding of the text, and will be unable to effectively use strategies for comprehension.

Students with good reading fluency will:

  • identify words quickly without hesitation
  • read smoothly with good phrasing
  • attend to punctuation marks such as commas, periods, question marks, and quotation marks
  • use appropriate expression and intonation

Students with poor reading fluency will:

  • frequently stop to "sound out" words
  • read word by word or in short, choppy phrases
  • frequently ignore punctuation marks
  • repeat (reread) many words, phrases, or sentences
