One new and exciting component of our instructional program is the introduction of a new advisory period. Every student will be assigned an advisor and there will be small group meetings throughout the year. Advisors will meet with students on a regular basis for academic, career, and personal-social advising. In order to foster communication with parents we have arranged a series of parent roundtables where parents have the opportunity to come in an informally speak with the administration. These meetings will be held on September 21, November 30, February 1, and April 25. These meetings will be held at 8AM and refreshments will be provided. We do ask that you call in advance if you plan on attending so that we have enough refreshments for everyone. Academic excellence is our first goal with high expectations for all students. Students will be provided a quality instructional program based on the Board-adopted curriculum. A key component of the instructional program this year will focus on assessment of students with teachers providing quality feedback to enhance student performance. A second goal is to help students so they will be well-rounded individuals. The expectation is George Read students be focused, consistent, and positive. In order to foster a productive environment that encourages academic achievement, George Read is Positive Behavior Support (PBS) School where students are recognized for making good choices. Each month there will be a PBS incentive to continually encourage student participation. A final goal is for students to be prepared for high school. It is important that students are academically and socially prepared in order to be successful at this level. If you have concerns, comments, or questions, please feel free to contact me at 323-2760. We are also always looking for parents to serve on our School Achievement Team. Please call the school office if you would like to be a participant in these meetings. I look forward to working with you and your child as he/she prepares for their journey into high school. Sincerely, Paul Walmsley Principal . Charging into Education . I recently completed a state sponsored cluster of classes entitled Implementation of Technology in the Classroom and look forward to incorporating many of the new ideas and topics discussed, in my exploratory classes, such as web quests, scavenger hunts and the creation of virtual tours to promote student learning. In fact technology is already integrated into all facets of my curriculum. There is a ceiling mounted projector with an inferred mouse and a remote that enables me to zoom into information on the screen and enlarge print or selected areas of the screen. The projector permits the use of one computer for the entire class projected on a sixty inch screen. The projector is also attached to the DVD/VCR combo and stereo system to create a cinematic experience. The inferred mouse facilitates teacher movement to assess student progress. I have a 4 in 1 printer connected to the teacher computer so student projects can be scanned and placed in individual folders and can also be used for future examples for incoming students. I can also print extra copies and receive faxes to my room, there is also a color printer attached to the student computer for their use in the classroom. In my classroom there are two computers one teacher computer and a student computer, which enables students to work independently or use special software in the target language to review vocabulary. There are also two averkeys one attached to the TV to display objectives, assignments and quiz dates. The other averkey is used in conjunction with the teacher computer and projector. I have a Logiteck 3 piece stereo system along with 2 speakers attached to the student computer. The stereo system can be attached to the computer or DVD/VCR combo and provides ample sound to fill the entire room. I have an online membership at Quia Quintessential Instruction Archive which provides a wide variety of educational services such as templates for creating 16 different types of online activities including flashcards, matching, word searches, challenge boards cloze exercises, hangman, jumbled words and quiz show style trivia games and the ability to create your own quizzes and class web pages. I also use specific Spanish software for classroom activities such as, Interactive Spanish/English Picture Dictionary, Vocabulary builder and Teach Yourself Spanish to expand students speaking and writing ability for confident communication. During each marking period, I use a digital video camera to film original student created scenarios as a final test Grade 6 In a clothing store, Grade 7 In the airport, and Grade 8 - In a caf. These videos are then played back for peer critique. Finally, course descriptions, Syllabi with current quiz/test dates, classroom behavior expectations and links to Spanish web sites are posted on the George Read Middle School home page. http://www.e2t2c2.net/georgeread/ If you have any questions or would like to send me a message, the most effective way to reach me is via mail which you can access through the above web site. Exploratory Teacher - Mr. Cecil World Languages The Golden Knights Information from the Guidance Department Welcome back to school! We hope that you had a relaxing summer and that you are ready to get back into the swing of things here at George Read. We have been preparing to meet the students and we have information about some programs for this year. The Stop Bullying, Build Respect Program: This program targets our 7th graders. It is a three session, online program. It is designed to help students examine and monitor their own behaviors, so that they can make good choices about bullying. Advisory Program: This program is school wide. Each student is assigned to a staff member who will be the student s advisor for the course of the year. Advisory groups will meet approximately 10 times per year. Discussion topics will include organizational skills and career explorations. Extra Curricular Activities: We offer a number of sports and activities. Refer to p. 8 in your student s agenda book for more information. Contact our Athletic Director, MR. SAWDEY if you have additional questions. Positive Behavior Support Program (PBS): Students earn shields for good behavior and good decisions. These shields can be traded for items from the PBS cart (pencils, erasers, etc.) or for entry to special activities (school dances, 5 on 5 basketball, etc.) Encourage your children to participate in the PBS program! Grades: There are 4 marking periods. Each is approximately 9 weeks long. Report cards and interim reports will be mailed home. If you do not receive your student s grade report, contact the Guidance Counselors! I m Joyce Linus, school nurse and Rita Ross is a district substitute nurse here also. All immunizations should be completed by the time they are in middle school. Please keep sending in any physical exam and immunization reports to the nurse s office to enable us to keep the student s health records updated. The green emergency cards are to be returned back to the nurse as soon as possible. The emergency cards are important to the school staff, as they contain any updated information, whether it is phone and address changes, and especially any pertinent information, such as medications, allergies and medical conditions. Please make sure your child eats breakfast either at home or here at school. IT IS the most important meal of the day. If you have any questions about any of the above please feel free to call me: 323-2766 or fax to 323-2763. Hello! My name is Crissy Goff and I am the Band Director at GRMS. Last year was my first year at GRMS and it was surly a great one. I come to GRMS with a degree in Music Education from the University of Delaware. It means a lot to me to be teaching in the Colonial School District because I graduated a Colonial in 2000! This year I am teaching both band and music appreciation. These two classes are proving to be a fun experience and I think it is going to be a terrific year! In the 6th grade music appreciation class students will get a chance to explore five different elements of music; form, melody, harmony, rhythm, and tone color. In class we will study each element and further analyze how each element applies to music and fits with the pop music of this generation. In 7th and 8th grade music appreciation we are studying what music is and how music developed through the years, connecting music history to modern music. Currently, both the 7th and 8th grade bands are preparing for the annual Colonial School District Middle School Band Day. Band Day is a day where all middle school band students in the district get a chance to play along side the high school students at a William Penn football game. Students will get a chance to play pre-game on the football field and they will also play in the stands with the high school band. This day is a lot of fun! If you are interested in attending Band Day it will be held on October 13th at William Penn at 1:30 pm. The 6th grade band is off to a great start also! The 6th grade class is our largest yet! 6th grade is an exciting year because it is a time when students really begin to expand their ability and broaden their playing styles. This year will we concentrate a lot on the basics of music and instrument playing in preparation for the upcoming years. There are a lot of great things going on in the GR music program. If you re not involved, it is never too late. Ask how you can get involved; we would be happy to have you! World Language Dear Sports Fans . Another year of exciting sports is upon us. After a record turnout for the annual Fall Sports Physical, participation in our extra curricular programs promises to be great.
