John G. Leach School Programs & Activities |
|---|
School ProgramOur goal is for every student to become an active and contributing member of society. We believe that our team approach to developing and implementing IEPs and the commitment by all staff and parents to our School Achievement Plan contribute to continued student growth. Leach's Curriculum Committee has identified domains and cross-environmental life skills to be used as the framework for the curriculum. Staff at Leach has worked to develop an action plan to address training of the new curriculum. An important element of our program is that the school and home programs for each student not only are parallel, but are also directly linked. For example, our school provides intensive training to parents on how to teach their children the skills needed to improve their sitting, standing and walking. Leach has also assisted many families in obtaining equipment for use at home, so that benefits are not limited to the school day. Our collaboration with parents has been a strength of our program. For example, out functional mobility program was honored by the Delaware Chamber of Commerce with a Year 2001 "Superstars in Education" award. |

Enrichment ClassesCertified Leach School staff provide a variety of instructional "specials." They include music, adapted physical education, and library for students ages 3 to 21. Goals for these programs include introducing students to a variety of learning techniques, presenting enrichment curriculum using methods of hands-on-learning, and embedding communication across all activities. The attainment of goals is enhanced through students' working individually or together in small groups. Themes are developed matching the developmental levels of each student. Paraprofessionals assist the teacher in providing instruction that meets individual student goals. |
Social EventsEach school year, John G. Leach School staff provides students with social skills building events at the preschool, elementary, middle, and secondary levels. When planning activities, staff works to make sure each event is similar to those experienced, by non-disabled grade level peers and aligned with student IEPs. Each activity (including dances, theatre, cultural trips, spirit week. and seasonal shopping) is designed to assist each student in preparing for life when returning to regular education programs or enjoying social activities in their home or community settings. |

The goals are for Leach students to expand their expressive and receptive communication and cognitive and social skills and to promote the belief that every child is unique and has the right to fairness, respect, and opportunities to make life long friendships. The "First Friends" program provides all students with objective-based pre-school thematic learning activities that enhance the inclusive classroom. |
