Language/Reading

6th Grade

The first few weeks of the Third marking period students will be working on improving their letter writing skills. We will be writing letters to friends, creating invitations to parties and writing letters to businesses. Students will also be reading a novel and a series of folk tales. The novel is entitled "Maniac Magee" and the selections of folk tales is in our Elements of Literature textbook. There will also be visits to the library to select books for personal reading.

 

Social Studies

6th Grade

The first few weeks of the Third marking period students will continue their study of the Ancient World. Our concentration is now on ancient Egypt and the wonders of that civilization. Our studies in this area of the world will include the entire continent of Africa. We will look at the landscape, climate, and history of the various states and territorities. This area has some of the most interesting geographical sites and students will have the opportunity to research some of them. .Our studys should help us to learn how geography impacts have been in securing the economic rights and civil rights of all the people including minorities.

 

Math

6th Grade

We are continuing our work in "Expressions and Formulas.”  When this unit is completed we will continue our studies in a unit entitled "Reallotment." This unit introduces the term reallotment, which means the reshaping of a figure to form a new figure with the same area as the original shape.  This often makes it easier to find and compare the areas of different shapes. We will study the relationship and use of formulas to the world around us. We will also investigate perimeter and the amount of space or volume inside a three-dimensional figure.

Science

6th Grade

During the Third marking period students will study of the "Forces that cause Motion." They are investigating how force, work and energy influence the motion of things. We will continue to look at simple machines and how we use them to make tasks easier to do. At the end of the unit students should know how chemical and electrical energy transform into mechanical energy. The annual race of the buggys should give lots of data to show how this transformation takes place.
