Ms. Vanaman's Grading Policy

Students in 8th Grade Social Studies will be graded on assignments within 6 major categories: Classwork, Homework, Question of the Day, Projects, Quizzes, and Tests.

Classwork: 20% Classwork will be assigned on an almost-daily basis. Students will be responsible to complete assigned tasks in-class. Classwork assignments may be completed independently or in partners/ small groups. Assignments range from reading and comprehension questions to group discussions and activities.

Homework: 10% Homework is given 2-3 times a week in social studies. Students are asked to write down the assignment in their agenda books and are given time to read the homework, go over the homework with the teacher, and ask questions. Students are expected to turn-in completed homework at the beginning of class the following day (unless otherwise noted). Homework never requires the textbook and is often a worksheet reviewing the concepts covered in-class that day.

Question of the Day: 20% Question of the Day are daily journal questions which students are to answer, in a journal, at the beginning of each class period. The answer to the journal is reviewed with the students after 3-4 minutes in class. The question is review from the previous day and is used as a refresher for the students. Every correct journal response is worth 2 points. Journals are collected every 2 weeks and graded.

Projects: 15% Projects are designed to supplement covered material. The intention of projects is for students to extend their learned knowledge and apply it to an activity. Students are given all needed supplies, as well as ample time in-class to complete all projects. Some projects are independent, while others are group (depending on the assignment).

Quizzes: 15% Quizzes are designed to be short assessment of students’ understanding and comprehension of the covered material. Ranging from 10-25 points, quizzes are announced and given to students after shorter sections within a unit.

Tests: 20% Tests are formal assessments designed to gauge a students’ understanding of the material covered. Tests are given after chapters or units and cover a standard-based focus question. Questions on the test range from multiple choice to true/false, fill-in-the-blank, and short/ long essays. Many questions are designed to follow the format of the DSTP.
