HEART RATE – WHAT WE STILL DO NOT UNDERSTAND

The simplest way to determine how much physical activity is enough to achieve good health is to listen to your own body;

listen to your heart – learn how fast it's beating. Physicians have asserted that 20 minutes of “good” cardiovascular

exercise a minimum of three times a week is essential to good health. “Good” cardiovascular exercise depends

on keeping your heart rate in your target heart rate zone!

Target Heart Rate Zones ~ A target heart rate zone is the zone within which the heart should beat to achieve

the desired physiological benefits (Physical Best, 1999). The appropriate target heart rate zone for exercise depends on your GOALS!

Here are some examples of possible target heart rate zones:

60–70 % HRmax = fat burning.

70–80 % HRmax = improve endurance.

80-100% HRmax = competitive
