Calculating Your Target Heart Rate

Directions: Use the following steps to find the low and high ends of your exercise target heart rate.

Review: To find your resting heart rate - take your pulse for 6 seconds and add a "0" to that number. My pulse beats 6 times in 6 seconds which = 60 beats per minute.

To Find your low and high ends of your target exercise heart rate zone:

STEP 1: Subtracting your age from 220 = the estimated maximum.

220 - _______(age) = _____________ (estimated maximum)

STEP 2: Subtract your resting heart rate from your estimated maximum.

________________(estimated max) - ________________ (resting heart rate) = _______________

STEP 3: Multiply the number you arrived at in Step 2 by 50 percent. Then add your resting heart rate back in.

________________ (answer from step 2) x .50 = ____________ + ______________ (resting heart rate) = _____________ (low end of your target heart rate).

STEP 4: Multiply the number you arrived at in Step 2 by 85 percent. Then add your resting heart rate back in.

________________ (answer from step 2) x .85 = ____________ + ______________ (resting heart rate) = _____________ (high end of your target heart rate).
