Physical Education & Health Courses Offered

Required Courses:
**Note: Any students not meeting the Health/Physical Education requirement in the appropriate grade must make the course up in summer school or through evening school.

Physical Education I
Available to students in grade 9 (required) ½ Credit
Physical Education I is designed to assist with the matriculation process of becoming a “physically educated” person by providing experiences and opportunities for each student to acquire knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to “value and enjoy a lifetime of participation in healthful physical activities”. Course content and objectives are designed to provide realistic and achievable expectations for the student’s performance in relevant and meaningful learning experiences in congruence with NASPE and Delaware Department of Education’s Physical Education Standards.

Physical Education II
Available to students in grade10 (required) ½ Credit
Physical Education II will provide the student with opportunities and experiences to enhance
developmental levels for skills, knowledge and confidence to enjoy a life span of healthful physical activity. All learning experiences will be comprehensive of the NASPE and Delaware Department of Education Physical Education Standards with realistic and achievable expectations for the student’s performance. Participation is essential and lessons include fitness testing, group and individual activities.

Health Education
Available to students in grade 9 (required) ½ Credit
Health Education is aligned with the Delaware Health Education Curriculum Framework which correlates with the National Health Education Standards. This course will incorporate up-to date health content, supported by strong Life Skills emphasis to protect, enhance, and maintain student health, with emphasis on decision-making and refusal skills. The curriculum is designed to motivate and assist students to maintain and improve their health, prevent disease, improve their abilities to demonstrate and increase their health related knowledge, skills and practices.

Physical Education (Adaptive)
Available to students in grades 9, 10, 11, 12 ½ Credit
This developmentally appropriate course is designed for students with special needs. The curriculum, tasks, equipment and / or environment will be adapted or modified so that it is appropriate for the student with special needs so that they can fully participate in physical education.
Prerequisite: Medical documentation and counselor recommendation

Elective Courses:

Weightlifting and Conditioning
Available to students in grades 11, 12 ½ Credit
This course encompasses various types of weight training and conditioning techniques. The student will have opportunities to acquire knowledge and skills to be able to develop person strength and or training programs.
Prerequisite: Physical Education 9 and Physical Education 10
