William Penn High School
Department of Science

Science Courses Offered

Required Courses:

Integrated Science I
Available to students in their First Semester 9th grade; ½ Credit
The course is divided into two semesters. During the first semester the students will cover Force, Motion and Mechanical Energy and the first half of the Foundations of Chemistry. Topics include force, speed, acceleration, energy, physical and chemical changes, and atomic structure. Emphasis will be placed on the 9th grade level expectations recommended by the State of Delaware.

Integrated Science I
Available to students in their Second Semester 9th grade; ½ Credit
The second semester will continue with the Foundations of Chemistry and end with Earth Systems. Topics include the periodic table, chemical bonding, chemical reactions, soils, physical and chemical weathering and the water cycle. Emphasis will be placed on the 9th grade level expectations recommended by the State of Delaware.

There are Honors sections offered each semester based on a student’s academic performance.

Integrated Science II
Available to students in their First Semester 10th grade; ½ Credit
During the first semester, the students will cover the Nature of Science and Evolution and the first half of the Chemical Biology unit. Topics include science as inquiry, experimental design, evolution, cells biochemistry, photosynthesis and cell respiration. Emphasis will be place on the 10th grade level expectations recommended by the State of Delaware.

Integrated Science II
Available to students in their Second Semester 10th grade; ½ Credit
The second semester will continue with Chemical Biology and end with Genetic Transmission and Biotechnology. Topics include mitosis, meiosis, genetics and biotechnology. This hands-on, activity oriented course will provide the students the opportunity to explore how traits are passed from generation to generation and how this has maintained the continuity of life on our planet. Emphasis will be place on the 10th grade level expectations recommended by the State of Delaware.

There are Honors sections offered each semester based on a student’s academic performance.

Integrated Science III
Available to students in grade 11 ½ Credit
In this semester course, students will cover Physical Laws That Operate in The Universe and The Dynamic Earth. Some of the topics covered will be Newton’s Laws, electric force, plate tectonics, earthquakes, and volcanoes. In addition, this course will further develop the concepts of force, motion and mechanical energy from Integrated Science I, impulse and momentum, electrostatics and electromagnetism. Emphasis will be placed on the 11th grade level expectations recommended by the State of Delaware.

Ecology
Available to students in grades 11, 12 ½ Credit
In this semester course, students gain the scientific background to help them understand Flow of Matter and Energy in Ecosystems, Changes in Ecosystems and Interaction of Humans Within Ecosystems. It will provide the background necessary to make decisions related to environmental issues. The appreciation and protection of our environment will be emphasized. The course focuses on the varied communities found on the Delmarva Peninsula as well as the major biomes of the world.
Prerequisite: Integrated Science II

Elective Courses:

Biology (Advanced Placement)
Available to students in grade 12 1 Credit
This course, designed for students who plan to attend a four-year college or who have above average skills, is comparable to a college biology course. This course will focus on the advanced study of living things at the molecular, cellular, organic, and ecological levels, emphasizing common features of structure, function, and heredity patterns. It prepares students for the Advanced Placement Biology Examination. Students are expected to take the A.P. exam. Prerequisite: Chemistry and teacher recommendation

Chemistry
Available to students in grades 11, 12 1 Credit
Chemistry is a full year course in the study of matter and its interactions for the college-bound student. Some of the topics explored are elements, compounds and mixtures, the periodic table and periodicity, the mole and mole concepts, chemical formulas and equations, atomic structure, phases of matter, atomic theory, gas laws, chemical bonding, and chemical reactions. With the laboratory and classroom experiences, students will be expected to use critical thinking and communication skills, record and analyze data, and present laboratory reports in an organized format.
Prerequisite: Algebra II or Integrated Mathematics III and Integrated Science II
There are Honors sections offered based on a student’s academic performance. Students who elect Honors Chemistry should have a strong mathematics background.

Chemistry (Advanced Placement)
Available to students in grade 12 1 Credit
This course, designed for students who plan to attend a four-year college or who have above average skills, is comparable to a college chemistry courses. It includes the rapid-paced study of atomic and molecular theory, acids, bases, energy, solutions, gases, oxidation-reduction and electrochemistry as a challenging level. This course will prepare students for the Advanced Placement Chemistry Examination. Students are expected to take the A.P. exam.
Prerequisite: Chemistry and teacher recommendation

Human Genetics 11, 12 ½ Credit
This course builds on foundational concepts of reproduction and inherited traits based on the study of DNA.
Prerequisite: Integrated Science II

Integrated Science IV
Available to students in grades 11, 12 ½ Credit
In this semester course, students will cover Heat, Waves, and Atmospheric Science. Some of the topics covered will be thermal energy, heat transfer and thermodynamics, sound, light, color, reflection and refraction, weather, water cycle and pressure.
Prerequisite: Integrated Science III

Oceanography
Available to students in grades 11, 12 ½ Credit
This course includes the study of seawater chemistry, tides, currents, geology, coastlines, marine communities, and oceanographic life forms. The impact of humans on marine communities will be explored. A field exercise will be included.
Prerequisite: Integrated Science II

Physics
Available to students in grades 11, 12 1 Credit
This course includes the study of mechanics, kinematics, magnetism and electricity, wave motion, optics and sound. Higher level math processing skills are essential in this course. Prerequisite: Algebra II or Integrated Mathematics III and Integrated Science III

Zoology
Available to students in grades 11, 12 ½ Credit
This course is a survey of the anatomy and physiology of the major animal phyla. Students will observe and/or dissect representatives of each phylum for comparative anatomy. Identification and classification of organisms as well as their life functions will be studied. Field exercises will be included.
Prerequisite: Integrated Science II
