Welcome to the Science Department at WPHS
The science curriculum is designed with a sequence of courses that will allow the student to meet Delaware State Science Content Standards. The DSTP Science Test is given in the spring to all 11th grade students.
Three credits of science instruction are required of all students for graduation. The Science Department strongly recommends students take four years of science to be competitive in both college and careers. Integrated Science I and II are courses designed as an introduction to the basic concepts of chemistry, physics, earth science and biology. These courses are designed to promote interest, develop scienceprocessing skills, and provide basic understanding of science applications to everyday life experiences.
Materials are presented through inquiry-based activities that stress computer and laboratory investigations. In addition, the courses will provide a rich knowledge base establishing a foundation for the continued study of science.
After the completion of Integrated Science I and II, students will have two options to fulfill their science requirements.
- Option one, students select Integrated Science III for ½ credit and Ecology for ½ credit
- Option two, recommended for college bound students, students select Integrated Science III or ½ credit and Chemistry for 1 credit.
When students have completed their three credits of science, additional academic electives are available. These include course such as AP Biology, AP Chemistry, Human Genetics, Integrated Science IV, Oceanography, Physics, and Zoology.
